“Buy now!”

“Best deal in town!”

“This is your moment.”

“Don’t miss this once in a lifetime opportunity!”

“These benefits are just the tip of the iceberg!”

Has your cringe reflex kicked in yet? These are just a few of dozens (maybe hundreds) of overused marketing phrases that float around in the marketing sphere across industries. Let’s say you are serious about marketing for business owners and you don’t want to sound cliche or like the shady car salesmen of yesteryear – what are you going to say to attract customers that won’t immediately make them walk away?

There are a variety of marketing ideas to attract customers and the very best ones are grounded in messaging strategy.

What do you say to attract customers?

There is not a one-size-fits-all magic phrase that immediately turns people into customers. If that were the case, I don’t think businesses would need a marketing team! Instead of looking for  short quotes to attract customers like a magic pill that turns bland words into marketing delicacies, instead pivot your focus to your messaging strategy.

Have you developed customer personas? If not, that’s step 1. A customer persona is a representation of your target customer and reveals insights into their goals, challenges, motivations, pet peeves, shopping habits, demographics, and more. You’ll never craft the perfect message if you don’t know anything about your customer and what will resonate with them.

Have you crafted brand voice guidelines? If not, that’s step 2. Brand Voice Guidelines are a set of “rules” that direct how you draft messages in a way that consistently represents your brand well while also speaking to your target customer effectively. Great messages begin with brand voice guidelines as the backbone.

How do you write a message to attract customers?

Sometimes, the most creative ways to attract customers is through traditional avenues that focus on creative messaging.

Once you are ready to draft your marketing message, think only of your customers, not of yourself or your business. This message is not about you; it’s about your customer, their pain point, and a plan to get them to a solution. You just happen to be the guide that points them in the right direction (towards your product or service). Get out of your own way when it comes to crafting messages and you’ll make huge strides in your conversion rates.

What is the most powerful word in selling?

As I already mentioned above, there is no such thing as a miracle word that makes potential customers throw cash at your product without another thought. There is, however, a formula for crafting the best advertising sentences (and all other marketing messages) and it will feel like magic once you see your conversion rates soar.

  1. Start by developing your customer personas. You need to know everything there is to know about your target customer persona before you begin writing messages.
  2. Customize everything to speak directly to your customer persona. Don’t use words that a bargain shopper wants to hear (free, on sale, save, etc.) if your customer persona is a premium, high-end, quality shopper. Instead use words such as exclusive, value, guarantee, premium quality, etc.
  3. Personalize as much as possible to speak directly to the individuals who are in your reach. Use their first name, speak formally or informally (whichever is their preference), text if they hate phone calls, email if they aren’t on social media, etc.
  4. Use words like “you” and/or “we.” Avoid “I” statements as much as possible. Remember, it’s not about you!

There might be some words that resonate with your audience that you should use consistently, but those should be determined after your customer persona has been developed.

How can I impress a customer with words?

Catchy lines to attract customers are great! But what matters even more than clever quips and creative rhymes are genuine, authentic messages that are simple and clear, appealing to emotions.

Don’t overthink your marketing messages. If you are, then chances are your customers will have to use some serious brain power to understand and process the message you are trying to share. Instead, keep your words simple, use direct language, and clearly state how your product or service is the solution your customer has been waiting for to solve their current problem. They are the hero, and you are simply the guide to get them to their happily ever after.
